Casa Carbonell
Complete interior restoration of a corner apartment in Barcelona’s iconic La Barceloneta neighborhood. A modernized art deco aesthetic brings together gold and pink accents, rich textures, and maximum space utilization in this beautiful jewel box piso. Solid bamboo flooring was used for its natural beauty and durability; it’s blond tone acting as a minimalist counterpoint to the punchy furniture and accessories.
The original 1960s floor plan included 3 bedrooms and was in much need of an update. The apartment was fully gutted and the middle bedroom was knocked out and replaced with a custom steel and polycarbonate sliding partition. The new layout feels spectacularly brighter and more spacious. A second door to the wrap around balcony was located in this middle room, meaning that circulation was also greatly enhanced.
Like many corner pisos in Barcelona, this apartment is blessed (cursed?) with many sharp angles. While architecturally interesting, these angles posed many challenges. The puzzle of the triangular primary bedroom was solved with the use of an open closet system that also serves as the dressers; the result is a modern and open room that isn’t congested with heavy furnishings. The triangular bathroom was also redesigned to be spacious, opulent, and more functional. The swinging door was replaced with custom double sliding doors painted dark charcoal and finished with gold art deco hardware. White subway tiles and off-white marble mosaic tiles were used to keep the space bright.
The subway tiles were repeated in the kitchen, along with white countertops, cabinets and appliances. The kitchen is perhaps the hardest working room in the house, making incredible use of the small galley space and incorporating a large farmhouse porcelain sink, a full range of appliances, plenty of storage, and a coffee bar.
Sant Pere de Ribes
Interior Monkey was commissioned to design the electric, lighting, kitchen layout and space plans for this new build in Sant Pere de Ribes, nestled in the hills above Sitges and one hour from Barcelona. It was an exercise in developing a highly custom design, with an electric and lighting solution as well as a kitchen plan catering to the specific needs of the clients.
Soma Breeze Penthouse
With a panorama of the sea and golf course, this stunning vacation home sits just off the reef side in Soma Bay. Having one of the best views in the bay, we did not want the design to outshine the natural beauty that the home is situated in. The focus was on comfort and a vacation state of mind. A spacious and bright interior, including an ergonomic office space, make it the a perfect retreat for both relaxation and remote work.
Adeline
Built in 1979, this spacious West Oakland home features an eclectic exterior style and a decidedly mid-century modern interior and floor plan. The front and back yards were redesigned with new landscaping, adding fig, mulberry, guava, lemon, tangerine and apple trees to blend seamlessly with the mature fruit trees that were already located on the large corner plot. New horizontal-slat fencing was added to modernize the exterior while offering privacy and aesthetic appeal.
The 4 bedroom home was designed meticulously with an East Bay cool aesthetic of mid century pieces and local street art. The kitchen was updated with marble countertops and white subway tiles.
Undoubtedly the most stunning (and unexpected!) space in this home is the loft adjoining the expansive primary bedroom. Sunlit with windows around the entire room, the studio features a freestanding MCM wood-burning stove and a vaulted ceiling. The mid century style was continued in this space and it was designed to function as the “fun room”.
Maadi Pied-à-Terre
On a leafy street in the Maadi enclave lies this stunning pied-à-terre. The design focused on building a quiet retreat distinguished by sumptuous materials and an attention to detail.
A neutral palette of cream, beige, sand and walnut was used to keep the design cohesive. Exquisite large slab Italian breccia marble was used for the flooring in the main spaces as well as the kitchen and coffee bar countertops, creating a seamless space that feels spacious and luxurious.
Special attention was given to the electric and lighting plan, ensuring that the space is as functional as it is beautiful. A combination of ambient, accent and task lighting makes controlling the quality and intensity of light a breeze. Beautiful wood ceiling fans were used in the different spaces for air circulation that is delightful for spring and autumn in Cairo.
