Complete interior restoration of a corner apartment in Barcelona’s iconic La Barceloneta neighborhood. A modernized art deco aesthetic brings together gold and pink accents, rich textures, and maximum space utilization in this beautiful jewel box piso. Solid bamboo flooring was used for its natural beauty and durability; it’s blond tone acting as a minimalist counterpoint to the punchy furniture and accessories.
The original 1960s floor plan included 3 bedrooms and was in much need of an update. The apartment was fully gutted and the middle bedroom was knocked out and replaced with a custom steel and polycarbonate sliding partition. The new layout feels spectacularly brighter and more spacious. A second door to the wrap around balcony was located in this middle room, meaning that circulation was also greatly enhanced.
Like many corner pisos in Barcelona, this apartment is blessed (cursed?) with many sharp angles. While architecturally interesting, these angles posed many challenges. The puzzle of the triangular primary bedroom was solved with the use of an open closet system that also serves as the dressers; the result is a modern and open room that isn’t congested with heavy furnishings. The triangular bathroom was also redesigned to be spacious, opulent, and more functional. The swinging door was replaced with custom double sliding doors painted dark charcoal and finished with gold art deco hardware. White subway tiles and off-white marble mosaic tiles were used to keep the space bright.
The subway tiles were repeated in the kitchen, along with white countertops, cabinets and appliances. The kitchen is perhaps the hardest working room in the house, making incredible use of the small galley space and incorporating a large farmhouse porcelain sink, a full range of appliances, plenty of storage, and a coffee bar.
